What is the Supervised Visitation Program (SVP)?
For close to 20 years, the Social Service Board’s Supervised Visitation Program (SVP) has been offering free services for families and children in need. Supervised visits are court-ordered in situations where there is a history of child abuse, domestic violence, neglect, drug abuse or mental illness. Rather than eliminating contact, family court judges order supervised visitation to allow non-custodial parents to spend time with their children in a structured and therapeutic environment. Other organizations provide supervised visitation services for $100 or more per hour. For parents with limited income, who need to see their children on a weekly basis, these costs are prohibitive. SVP provides all services free of charge, including mandatory support groups for custodial parents and non-custodial parents. Without our program, these families might never have an opportunity to heal.
