Appalachian grandfather Ed Wiley, 49, has staged a one man sit-in, walked 455 miles to Washington, DC and is now spending September 2007 in the media capital of the world, NYC - all to capture the nation's attention to the severe environmental and human costs of modern coal extraction imposed on the Appalachian Mountains and people. Wiley has been fighting for the safety of students at Marsh Fork Elementary School in West Virgina, which is located near a massive coal processing and extraction operation. Earth Day - April 22, 2007
NYSEC joined with Others Are Us for an amazing cross-cultural experience. Our Sunday School students were provided a rare glimpse into the lives of students from Yemen, Saudia Arabia, and Isreal through their artwork and writings. In exchange, our students wrote and created artwork to share about their feelings and their understandings of nature, the earth, and it's different people and cultures. More than a creative exercise, the experience was a reminder for all of us that children around the world share many beautiful ideas, dreams and hopes for peace. We have more in common than we realize!
Visit www.othersareus.org/drawings.php to view children's artwork. Click on the individual pictures to see a larger image and what the kids wrote about their work!
