Ethics and the Theater

Elliott Library, Room 507

The Trip to Bountiful, by Horton Foote. Set in 1950s Texas, like most of Horton Foote’s plays, it’s about the search for a place of rootedness and belonging that, if it exists at all, exists only inside each of us, in our memories and imaginings of home. For Carrie Watts, the elderly widow at the center of the play, the place is Bountiful, the small rural town where she grew up and raised a family. She lives now in a two-room apartment in Houston with her son, Ludie, and his wife, Jessie Mae, with whom she is engaged in a futile struggle for control—of the household, her pension check, and her life. Suffocated by the continual bickering, Carrie determines to return to Bountiful. Her journey there is beset by obstacles, but blessed as well in the kindness she discovers from strangers and, finally, even from her son and daughter-in-law.

Join us at 6:30 pm for a wine and cheese reception before the play and stay afterward to participate in the discussion of the ethical issues of the play, led by Dr. Anne Klaeysen. Susan Horowitz directs our cast, which includes Pat Debrovner, Tiffany Esteb, Dan Hanson, Antonio Pagliarulo, Clare Patterson, and Tom Weishaar. Pat Berens narrates the reading. Donation $5.
